Earth To US

Blog Page

I started this blog during my sophomore year for an English project. Since then, I have continued to add articles to it about our impact on the environment and potential solutions for reducing our impact. Some of the topics I have written about include microplastics, National Parks, ice ages, and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles.

Microplastics Project

Engineering solution

Over the course of this year, I developed a solution to the problem of microplastics in our environment. I first researched the problem of microplastics in the environment extensively and summarized the research on my blog. I also analyzed current solutions to the problem. I then came up with many potential solutions, and after evaluating them, decided to develop a plan and design mock-ups for a system of robots that would collect microplastics from the surface of the ocean and turn it into vanillin. Finally, I created an elevator pitch for my solution that could be used to gain funding for the project.

Wet Cell Battery

AP Chemistry Project

Over winter break, we were given an optional chemistry project to create a wet cell battery to power a real world object. After going through many iterations, experimenting with different cell sizes, various connection patterns, and multiple different electrolytes, I created a two-cell battery using aluminum foil, copper wire, and bleach in milk jugs to power a toy motor. This was a rewarding project because I was able to see a real-world intersection between chemistry and physics while using my engineering skills at the same time.
